Lake Insula is a large, island-filled wilderness lake located in the heart of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Accessible from Entry Point 30 (Lake One) and several surrounding routes, Insula is known for its expansive waters, numerous bays, rocky shorelines, and scenic campsites.
The lake offers a different experience than the smaller interconnected lakes found along the Numbered Lakes chain. With its many islands, inlets, and protected bays, paddlers can spend days exploring different sections of the lake while enjoying opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and quiet wilderness travel. Portions of the shoreline were affected by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire, creating a landscape where open views, standing fire-scarred trees, and recovering forest growth can be seen alongside older stands of timber.
Lake Insula is a rewarding destination for both newer and experienced paddlers. Its size provides plenty of room for exploration, while its location along popular routes makes it a convenient wilderness destination without requiring an extended expedition.
