Saganaga Lake is a vast, island-filled wilderness lake located along the northern edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the U.S.–Canada border. Accessible directly through Entry Point 55 and connected to several surrounding routes and entry points, Saganaga is one of the largest and most complex lakes in the Boundary Waters. Its hundreds of islands, numerous bays and narrow passages, rocky shorelines, and many campsites provide a wide variety of places to explore. The lake also forms an important gateway to the Canadian border and routes into Quetico Provincial Park.
The size and layout of Saganaga create a wide range of paddling experiences, from sheltered island channels to large stretches of open water where wind can quickly become a concern. Interesting destinations include American Point, a prominent landmark and the boundary between the motorized and paddle-only portions of the lake, as well as routes toward Ottertrack Lake, Ester Lake, Red Rock Lake, and the Granite River. Paddlers can also explore the many islands and bays along the border, where the shoreline becomes increasingly remote.
Saganaga is one of the BWCA lakes where motorized travel is permitted on part of the lake. Motors up to 25 horsepower are allowed on the portion east of American Point, while motors may not be used or possessed west of American Point. Paddlers traveling west of American Point will find a paddle-only environment, while those remaining on the eastern portion should be prepared to share the water with motorboats.
Saganaga is well suited to both basecamp trips and longer wilderness routes. Its many campsites and connections to surrounding lakes make it possible to stay on the lake and explore by day, or use Saganaga as a starting point for routes deeper into the Boundary Waters. Because of its size and exposure, paddlers should pay particular attention to wind and weather before committing to long open-water crossings.
