Sea Gull Lake

Seagull Lake is a large, island-filled wilderness lake in the Gunflint District of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Accessible through Entry Point 54, the lake covers nearly 4,000 acres and is known for its many islands, rocky shoreline, sheltered bays, and numerous campsites. Seagull is also an important starting point for longer trips toward Alpine, Red Rock, Ogish, and the Knife Lake area.

The lake offers a mix of open-water paddling and more protected routes between its islands and bays. One of the most notable features is the Palisades, a prominent stretch of cliffs along the north shore. Paddlers can also explore the area around Three Mile Island, visit the portage and waterfall route toward Alpine Lake, or take the long portage toward Paulson Lake for a more challenging day trip. Seagull's many islands and sheltered shorelines also provide plenty of opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and exploring away from the main landing.

Seagull is unusual for a BWCA lake because limited motorized travel is permitted on part of the lake. Motors are allowed on the eastern portion, generally east and south of Three Mile Island, with a 10-horsepower limit; no motors may be used or possessed west of Three Mile Island. Paddlers looking for a quieter experience should continue west of the motor boundary, where the lake becomes paddle-only.

The surrounding landscape also reflects several historic wildfires, including the 2004 Cavity Lake Fire, 2005 Alpine Lake Fire, and 2007 Ham Lake Fire. These fires shaped much of the shoreline and created a mix of open areas, standing fire-scarred trees, and recovering forest. With its large number of campsites, multiple route options, interesting shoreline features, and access to deeper wilderness, Seagull Lake works well both as a destination for a basecamp trip and as the starting point for a longer BWCA route.
