Starting from EP 23 Mudro Lake
The Mudro to Gun Lake Loop begins and ends at Entry Point 23 (Mudro Lake). From the entry, the route works north and west through a chain of connected lakes to reach Gun Lake at the far point of the loop, then returns through Fourtown Lake to close back at the starting point.
The route strings together a series of small and mid-sized wilderness lakes, each joined by its own portage. After leaving Mudro Lake, you pass through Sandpit, Tin Can Mike, and Horse before reaching the more open water of Fourtown. From there the way narrows again through Boot and Fairy on the paddle out to Gun Lake, the loop's quiet turnaround. The mix keeps the paddling varied — forested shorelines and close, sheltered waters on the smaller lakes, with broader, more exposed stretches across Fourtown. Frequent carries of varying length link the whole chain together.
This route suits paddlers who enjoy steady portaging and don't mind moving canoe and gear over land often. The many short-to-moderate carries reward those comfortable with a working rhythm of paddle and portage, and the spread of lakes along the loop leaves room to set your own daily distance over a multi-day trip.
Mudro Lake → Horse Lake
Portage off Mudro and work through Sandpit and Tin Can Mike, settling into the route's steady rhythm of short paddles and carries before reaching Horse Lake.
Horse Lake → Fairy Lake
Cross into the broader water of Fourtown, then thread the smaller lakes through Boot to Fairy, where the route narrows toward the turnaround.
Fairy Lake → Gun Lake → Boot Lake
Paddle out to Gun Lake at the far end of the loop and take time to explore its quiet shoreline, then begin the return through Fairy and back to Boot.
Boot Lake → Mudro Lake
Close the loop by returning through Fourtown and its portages, working back across the connecting lakes to the entry point at Entry Point 23.
