About this route

The Mountain Lake Loop is a scenic Boundary Waters loop that begins and ends at Entry Point 62 (Clearwater Lake). This route showcases crystal-clear water, towering ridges, and historic border lakes, making it one of the most picturesque trips in the eastern Boundary Waters.

Starting on Clearwater Lake, paddlers travel east to Mountain Lake, which forms part of the international border between the United States and Canada. Mountain Lake is known for its long, narrow shape, dramatic cliffs, and expansive wilderness views.

The route then turns south through Caribou Lake, offering a quieter contrast with protected waters and forested shorelines before returning to Clearwater Lake. The combination of large border lakes, sheltered inland waters, and moderate portages creates an enjoyable trip for a wide range of paddlers.

Campsites are well distributed throughout the route, allowing flexibility for overnight trips while providing opportunities to fish, photograph wildlife, or simply enjoy the surrounding wilderness.

Route Highlights:

Classic loop beginning and ending at Clearwater Lake. Paddle the scenic border waters of Mountain Lake. Enjoy dramatic cliffs, clear water, and panoramic wilderness views. Experience both expansive border lakes and quieter inland waters. Excellent opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and backcountry camping.
