About Caribou Lake
Caribou Lake covers about 720 acres in Cook County, a few miles up the Caribou Trail (Cook County Road 4) from Lutsen. It carries the Tofte district label on paper, but that is an administrative boundary rather than a wilderness one: no portage reaches it and there is no campsite anywhere on the lake, so this is a drive-to lake with a boat launch rather than a stop on a paddle-in route. The same road keeps climbing north past here toward the Baker and Homer Lake entry points, but Caribou itself sits well short of the wilderness boundary.
The lake splits into a western basin and an eastern one, with the public access sitting on the southwest shore of the western basin. It runs shallow for its size, reaching only about 30 feet at the deepest point, and well over half the lake bottoms out on a shelf shallow enough to fish from the surface down, so most of it fishes more like a broad flat than a lake with a real deep hole to work.
Walleye and northern pike carry the fishery, both running above the state's management targets here. Yellow perch are thick but stay small, more forage than table fish, and smallmouth bass turn up occasionally with a real shot at a trophy among them. Crappie, bluegill, and pumpkinseed round out a lake that rewards a mixed bag more than a single target species.
A small gravel lot on the western basin holds about six vehicles and is the only formal access point. Rusty crayfish, an invasive species, have taken hold in the lake and their numbers have grown fast enough that gear should get cleaned before heading to another lake.
Caribou suits an afternoon of walleye and pike fishing out of Lutsen more than a wilderness trip. It sits alongside the road that leads to the real entry points further up the Caribou Trail, a lake you drive to and launch on rather than one you paddle into.
