About Birch Lake

Birch Lake is a reservoir before it's anything else. Minnesota Power dams the South Kawishiwi River at its outlet, storing water through the open season to boost winter generation at the Winton hydro station downstream, and that operation pulls the lake down by as much as 4 feet between mid-November and April 1 before it refills by mid-May. The dam itself was the last major wooden structure in Minnesota Power's hydro system until a 2014 rebuild replaced it with concrete. The reservoir covers about 7,074 acres in St. Louis County near Babbitt, and it carries a Kawishiwi district designation but sits outside the wilderness boundary: the nearest entry points, along the South Kawishiwi River and at Little Gabbro Lake, sit 9.5 and 10.9 straight-line miles away with no portage connecting to either.

The basin runs long and shallow rather than deep, stretching about 15 miles with a maximum depth of only 25 feet and just 15 percent of the lake counting as littoral zone. Bog-stained water keeps clarity modest, with Secchi readings typically running 5 to 7 feet. Shoreline totals over 90 miles, a figure the flooded river valley and its many arms and bays account for more than the lake's open-water footprint would suggest.

Walleye lead the fishery by a wide margin in recent surveys, and northern pike have grown larger under a 24-to-36-inch protected slot in place since 2003. Cisco and tullibee show up in good numbers as well, with yellow perch, white sucker, black crappie, smallmouth bass, and bluegill filling out the rest of the catch.

Motors run freely here, and houseboats and a full-service marina are among the lake's main draws rather than an afterthought. Timber Bay Lodge & Houseboats operates that marina at the lake's southwest end near Babbitt, renting houseboats, lodge rooms, and cabins alongside gas, bait, and basic provisions. Public access is spread across several points, including a county landing on the southwest end, a Babbitt-run boat launch and swimming beach, and a Minnesota Power wayside rest and shorefishing area at the dam itself on Highway 1. Two U.S. Forest Service campgrounds add primitive, water-accessible sites along the shore, separate from the BWCA's permit and quota system, and there's no wilderness campsite system on the lake itself. About three-quarters of the shoreline remains undeveloped and in public ownership, though private cabins have grown from around 30 in the 1950s to roughly 200 by the late 1990s.

Birch Lake suits a houseboat trip or a few days of walleye fishing out of Babbitt rather than a wilderness route. It's a developed, dam-controlled reservoir well outside the BWCA, without the portages or quota campsites that define the lakes further south.
