Portagr

Terms of Service

Effective July 31, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Portagr ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

Portagr is an interactive trip-planning tool for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA). It provides route suggestions, portage information, and campsite locations to assist with recreational trip planning. The Service is intended solely as a planning aid and is not designed or intended to be used as a real-time navigation device.

3. Safety Disclaimer — Please Read Carefully

Portagr is not a substitute for official USFS maps, permits, or wilderness navigation skills.

  • Routing data may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate. Always verify portage locations and conditions before your trip.
  • Water levels, portage accessibility, and trail conditions change seasonally and after weather events.
  • Always carry a current paper map and compass. Do not rely solely on this tool in the field.
  • Obtain all required USFS permits before entering the BWCA.
  • Portagr bears no responsibility for decisions made in the field based on information from this Service.

4. Accuracy of Information

We make reasonable efforts to maintain accurate portage and campsite data, but we make no warranty, express or implied, regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability, or fitness for any particular purpose of the information provided. Route calculations are algorithmic estimates and may not reflect actual on-the-ground conditions.

5. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Portagr and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages — including but not limited to injury, death, property loss, or financial loss — arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Service or any information obtained through it.

6. Intellectual Property

The Portagr application, interface, and original content are owned by Portagr. Map tiles are provided by OpenStreetMap contributors (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL) and the U.S. Geological Survey. Portage data is sourced from the U.S. Forest Service Superior National Forest. These third-party datasets retain their respective licenses.

7. Permitted Use

You may use the Service for trip planning, subject to the plan you subscribe to. You agree not to:

  • Scrape, copy, or redistribute the Service's data or routing algorithms
  • Use the Service in any way that could harm, disable, or impair it
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service

8. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. The effective date at the top of this page will reflect the date of the most recent revision.

9. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
