About Ensign Lake

Ensign Lake covers 1,411 acres in the Kawishiwi district of the Boundary Waters, about 23 miles northeast of Ely. It sits within a few miles of the Moose and Snowbank Lake entry points, some of the closer access into this stretch of wilderness, which puts it on a well-traveled path for parties heading toward Missionary Bay, Ashigan, and the lakes beyond.

The lake stays shallow for its size, topping out at 30 feet, and close to half of it is shallow enough to warm through the summer and grow weeds. Almost 28 miles of shoreline fold that water into bays and points, so Ensign reads as broken, varied water rather than one long crossing, and a wind that builds chop on one stretch usually leaves a sheltered bay to duck into somewhere else.

Walleye define the fishery here, and Ensign is a genuinely productive walleye lake, mentioned in the same breath as nearby Moose and Disappointment for how well its walleye population holds up. Northern pike and both smallmouth and largemouth bass round it out, an uncommon combination for one BWCA lake, while cisco stay down in the cooler water.

Thirty-eight campsites spread across that much shoreline, more than most lakes this size carry, so there's usually room to find one even given how close the lake sits to popular entry points.

Ensign Lake suits paddlers who want strong walleye and bass fishing without pushing deep into the wilderness for it, on water close enough to the entry points that it sees real traffic through the open season.
