About Little Saganaga Lake
Little Saganaga Lake covers 1,627 acres deep in the Gunflint district of the BWCA, in Cook County toward Tofte. No entry point sits on the lake itself; the closest, Brant Lake, Missing Link Lake, and Cross Bay Lake, are all eight to nine miles out, so getting here usually means several days of paddling and portaging rather than a short first-day push. Once you arrive, short carries fan out to Vierge, Elm, Rattle, Mora, and several other lakes, and the lake works as a hub for longer loops such as the Brant to Saganaga Explorer and the Brant Wilderness Loop.
The lake runs deep for its size, dropping to 150 feet in its main basin, and only about a quarter of it stays shallow enough to count as littoral habitat. Nearly 44 miles of shoreline wraps around that basin, folded into bays and islands well beyond what the acreage alone suggests, which makes route-finding across it slower than the straight-line distance implies.
Little Saganaga is managed primarily for lake trout, and the population sustains itself naturally; the lake has not been stocked since 1950. Anglers should expect steady numbers of trout in the 16- to 22-inch range rather than trophy fish, since few grow much larger here. Northern pike serve as the secondary species and hold up well, with a good share of fish over 21 inches, though the lake rarely produces anything past 30. Burbot round out the predator base. Yellow perch stay scarce and small, which limits forage for everything else, and neither walleye nor smallmouth bass are native to this lake.
Motors are banned throughout, as everywhere in the wilderness. Twenty-four campsites are scattered among the islands and bays, with only one currently closed, and the broken shoreline means a stiff wind rarely shuts down the whole lake at once.
Little Saganaga suits parties already committed to a longer trip through the interior Gunflint lakes, particularly anyone targeting lake trout, rather than paddlers looking for an easy lake to reach on a short trip.
