About Phoebe Lake

Phoebe Lake covers about 610 acres in the Tofte district of the Boundary Waters, in Cook County. It doesn't sit close to any single entry point: Kawishiwi Lake, Hog Creek, and Sawbill Lake all reach it from several miles out, and it shows up partway through the Brant Wilderness Loop, a five- to seven-day route that starts well to the east at Cross Bay Lake. Getting here usually means already being a few days into a trip rather than paddling straight in.

The lake runs shallow for its size. It bottoms out at 25 feet, but the average depth is closer to 10, and roughly two-thirds of the basin stays shallow enough to fish from the surface down. Boulder and rubble make up most of the shore, with only scattered patches of muck or sand, and weeds stay thin, holding in a few bays rather than spreading across the lake. Clarity runs better than 10 feet most years, clear enough to watch the rock drop-offs from a canoe.

Walleye are what Phoebe is known for, growing fast and holding in good numbers, with one strong year class still working through the population. Northern pike turn up as well, some of them reaching solid size despite spotty reproduction from year to year. Smallmouth bass are present too, though in far smaller numbers than the other two.

Eight campsites sit around the lake, none of them closed, which leaves room to spread out without much competition for a site.

Phoebe suits a party already well into a longer loop rather than a first stop out of a nearby entry point. It sits several days deep into the Tofte district on a route that circles well before it comes back out.
