About White Iron Lake

White Iron Lake covers about 3,237 acres in St. Louis County, its eastern shore starting roughly five miles from Ely. It carries a Kawishiwi district designation, but like Bear Island Lake to the west, it sits outside the wilderness boundary itself. The nearest entry points, Farm Lake and Fall Lake, sit 4.9 and 6.9 straight-line miles away with no portage reaching White Iron directly. Instead, the lake connects by open water through the White Iron Chain (Garden, Farm, and South Farm lakes) toward the BWCAW, so it's a lake you reach by boat from town rather than one a wilderness route runs through.

The basin holds moderate depth, dropping to 47 feet at its deepest, with roughly half the lake shallow enough to count as littoral zone. Heavy tannin staining from the surrounding bogs and wetlands keeps the water brown and limits how much aquatic vegetation can take hold, and Secchi clarity typically runs 5 to 6 feet. Shoreline stretches nearly 35 miles, mostly rocky, with muck and vegetation collecting in a few of the bays. A large watershed relative to the lake's size flushes the water through in about 45 days, a fast turnover for a lake this size.

Walleye and northern pike reproduce naturally here with no current stocking, and both carry protected slots: walleye between 17 and 26 inches must go back, with one longer fish allowed, and pike between 24 and 36 inches face the same rule. Pike over 40 inches turn up routinely in fisheries department sampling, a sign of a genuine trophy fishery. Yellow perch, cisco, and lake whitefish work the deeper water, while bluegill, black crappie, and smallmouth bass have become more common in recent surveys.

Motors run without restriction on White Iron, unlike neighboring Farm and Fall lakes, which cap outboards at 25 horsepower, and there's no wilderness campsite system here. Resorts line good stretches of the shore, among them White Iron Beach Resort, Pine Point Lodge, and Retreats on White Iron Lake, alongside private cabins. Three public accesses serve the rest of the lake: two concrete ramps on the west shore and the navigable channel connecting north to Farm Lake.

A dam on Garden Lake controls water levels through the chain as part of a small hydroelectric reservoir system, which factors into that fast flushing rate. The lake also serves as the state's Sentinel Lakes Program monitoring site for the Canadian Shield ecoregion of northeastern Minnesota, tracked over time as a reference point for how lakes in this bedrock-and-bog landscape change.

White Iron suits a resort stay built around trophy pike and walleye fishing more than a wilderness trip. It's a developed, unrestricted-motor lake at the edge of the chain that eventually reaches the BWCAW, without the portages or quota campsites of the lakes beyond it.
