About this route

This classic western Boundary Waters route combines scenic rivers, expansive border lakes, and excellent opportunities for fishing and wildlife viewing. Beginning at Entry Point 14 (Little Indian Sioux River North), the route follows a gentle river into Upper and Lower Pauness Lakes before reaching the large waters of Loon Lake.

From Loon, the route enters the historic border waters of Lac La Croix, one of the largest lakes in the Boundary Waters. Paddlers can explore its rugged shorelines, numerous islands, and sweeping wilderness scenery before heading south through Lake Agnes and the Nina Moose River. The journey finishes at Entry Point 16 (Moose/Portage River North) after following a scenic river corridor known for its calm paddling, marshes, and frequent wildlife sightings.

With a mix of small rivers, medium-sized lakes, and expansive border waters, this route offers a memorable cross-section of the Boundary Waters. Campsites are available throughout the route, making it suitable for multi-day trips with flexible itineraries. The larger lakes can become challenging in windy conditions, so early morning travel is often recommended when crossing open water on Loon Lake and Lac La Croix.

Route highlights:

Travel through the Little Indian Sioux River and Nina Moose River corridors. Paddle across the historic border waters of Lac La Croix. Experience a variety of landscapes, from narrow rivers to large wilderness lakes. Numerous campsites allow for flexible trip planning. Good opportunities to see eagles, loons, beavers, and moose in quieter sections.
