About this route
Lac La Croix Route
Overview
The Lac La Croix Route begins and ends at Entry Point 16 on the Moose River, working north through Nina Moose Lake and Lake Agnes before reaching the open water of Lac La Croix on the Canadian border, then retraces the same corridor back to the landing. The trip's hardest carry comes right at the start, lifting paddlers out of the Moose River before the water opens up and the portaging eases for the rest of the way in.
Nina Moose Lake and Lake Agnes are the interior stops along the way, each holding real camping options before the crossing onto Lac La Croix itself, a lake large enough to feel like a different kind of water than anything earlier in the trip. Boulder Bay, on the Canadian side, holds an aged pictograph on a sheer rock face, a site still considered spiritually significant by the Lac La Croix Band whose village sits on the lake today.
This route suits paddlers ready for one demanding carry early and comfortable with open-water travel on a big border lake later on. Curtain Falls sits within reach as a side trip east from Lac La Croix for groups with an extra day to spend, portaging through to Crooked Lake and back before returning the way they came.
Route Highlights
- An aged pictograph on a sheer rock face in Boulder Bay, still considered spiritually significant by the Lac La Croix Band
- Curtain Falls, reachable as a side trip east from Lac La Croix through a portage to Crooked Lake
- The open, island-studded expanse of Lac La Croix itself, a sharp contrast to the river and interior lakes earlier in the trip
