About this route

Little Vermilion Lake to Loon Lake

Overview

The Little Vermilion Lake to Loon Lake route is an out-and-back trip that begins and ends at Entry Point 12. Paddlers cross from Crane Lake through Little Vermilion Narrows onto Little Vermilion Lake with no carry required, then continue north down the Loon River to reach Loon Lake before retracing the same water back to Crane Lake.

The Loon River carries the route's real work, with a run of portages that includes a carry at Loon Falls on the way to Loon Lake. Loon Lake itself sits near the international boundary and is considerably larger than Little Vermilion Lake, holding walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and several other species across its open water.

This route suits groups who want the option to set their own trip length: paddlers can stop at Little Vermilion Lake for an easy couple of days on open water, or continue down the Loon River for a longer, more demanding trip to Loon Lake and back. The border-country character and boat traffic on Crane Lake and Little Vermilion Lake near the landing set this entry point apart from a fully remote start.

Route Highlights

  • Loon Falls, a named landmark on the Loon River between Little Vermilion Lake and Loon Lake
  • Loon Lake's size and mixed fishing near the international boundary
  • Option to shorten the trip by turning back at Little Vermilion Lake instead of continuing to Loon Lake
