Alpine Lake

Alpine Lake sits inland from Seagull and Saganaga Lakes in the Gunflint district of the BWCA, about six miles from either motorized entry point. Most parties reach it as part of the Red Rock Loop running two to five days out of Seagull, or on the longer Brant to Saganaga routes that start well to the west. Short portages connect it to Jasper, Red Rock, and Rog Lakes, with a tougher 101-rod carry linking it directly to Seagull.

At 909 acres, Alpine runs to 65 feet in its deepest basin, with close to half its area shallow enough to count as littoral. Nearly 24 miles of shoreline outlines the lake, and the water stays reasonably clear for the area.

Walleye carry the fishery now, growing fast on a population of dwarf cisco so small it barely shows up in standard survey nets but still supplies enough forage to matter. Lake trout used to be part of the picture too, but their numbers collapsed sometime after 1972 and the cold, oxygenated water they need is only marginally present today. Northern pike and smallmouth bass turn up in low numbers, likely limited by poor spawning success rather than a lack of food, and lake whitefish, once abundant enough to interest commercial netters, have thinned out as well.

Much of the country around Alpine burned in the 2006 Cavity Lake Fire, which spread through the area east of here around Seagull Lake. That fire burned later in the season and hotter than the Ham Lake Fire that followed a year later, and its regrowth has been slower and sparser as a result: expect open stands of young aspen, birch, and jack pine rather than mature conifer along much of the shore, with less shade at exposed sites.

The lake carries 21 campsites, three of them closed. Between the open, sun-exposed shoreline and the direct link to Seagull, Alpine works well as a short add-on to a Seagull-based trip rather than a destination people build a whole route around.
